Miley Cyrus can’t catch a break. It seems like the world refuses to let her grow up. Everyone expects her to stay Hannah Montana forever, but it’s time to face the facts — it’s not going to happen. She can’t be tamed, and the more she’s criticized, the more likely it becomes that she’ll lash out with more risque outfits and girl-on-girl kissing. Come on, she’s a 17-year-old teenage girl. They don’t want to be told what they can and can’t do. What’s really bizarre is why the world is so focused on her when there are other teen stars acting the same way. Honestly, ever since ‘Gossip Girl’ star Taylor Momsen started wearing excessive dark eye makeup, donning her now trademark thigh-high garters and declared her hatred for wearing pants, why have we accepted that it’s okay for this 16-year-old to be a role model … when Cyrus is criticized for taking a wrong breath. Both underage girls rose to fame as cute actresses and then decided to hit the mainstream music scene. For the record, Momsen is younger than Cyrus. Gasp! So what’s with the double standard?

Momsen’s transformation seemed to happen overnight. She traded in her long locks and frilly wardrobe for leather biker jackets, boots and necklaces in the shape of a revolver. In March 2009, Momsen and her band, The Pretty Reckless, were signed to Interscope Records. She wrote all of the songs, sang and played guitar on their debut album. And her new single is titled ‘Make Me Wanna Die.’ ‘Can’t Be Tamed’ seems rather tame in comparison. But be warned — don’t compare her to Courtney Love.

“I don’t wanna be Courtney Love — I wanna be Kurt Cobain. He’s brilliant and his songs are genius. The Hole records are great. Everyone always compares me to Courtney Love because they think we, like, dress the same and we both have blond hair, wear lipstick and dresses. But I’m sorry, don’t a lot of girls dress like that? I look at Nirvana. I don’t look at Hole,” she told EW in April.

And look at Momsen’s fashion. Now that’s hardcore. Her signature thigh-high garters, dark eye makeup and lack of pants are more rockstar than Cyrus will probably ever be. (Miley — that’s not a bad thing.) But do you really want your children looking up to her as a role model? She’s been photographed smoking cigarettes on set and in leaked photos. And she’s been seen drinking, making out with another girl and partying the night away.

But everyone seems to turn a blind eye on Momsen. The focus has instead been on why Cyrus isn’t allowed to pose in Vanity Fair, get a tattoo or kiss a girl without the world flailing their arms in disbelief and disgust. Without sounding too much like Chris Crocker, it is time to “Leave Miley alone!” If Momsen can “get away” with everything she’s doing, we need to stop judging these underage pop stars altogether and let them live their lives.
